The Exhibition "The Lyngby Axe: 13,000 Year Warranty"

2021 - 08 - 06

The oldest axe in Lithuania. It has been lying since the Stone Age on the shores of a large and shallow body of water that once concentrated in the Biržai district. Research suggests that it was an attractive place for a temporary campground. A tool made from a reindeer antler, indispensable to nomadic communities at the time - a Lyngby-type axe - was probably lost during the hunt. Over thousands of years, deciduous trees have replaced the tundra that has spread in this place, and we will no longer find the lake here today - the river has broken through its riverbed. Usually the artefacts disappear over thousands of years, so it was a real miracle that this axe reached our times.

We will not know the exact reason why the axe was lost in this place and stayed here for such a long time. However, what we really know is that this axe is 13,000 years old. Unexpectedly discovered, it immediately became the oldest currently known archaeological find in Lithuania and settled in the list of Lyngby-type artefacts very rarely found in Europe.

Today, this axe no longer lies at a depth of 1.5 meters in Parupė village, Biržai district. Today, it is the main exhibit of the exhibition "The Lyngby Axe: 13,000 Years Warranty" at the Biržai Region Museum "Sėla".

The exhibition will last until 20 September, 2021.
